Verecund Manor

RYOH

I’m sorry…That’s all I can say. I should have stopped at that gas station. I probably didn’t tell you: we passed a gas station maybe an hour ago. I know I said I’d describe everything we passed, but I just miss some stuff every so often. I’m more accustomed to long trips with sighted people than blind folks like yourself.

Anyway, I thought there’d be another one by now. It’s not like this is the wilderness or anything. It’s a string of old towns. You’d think they’d have gas stations.

Now we have to walk. Take my arm so I can lead you. It’s pretty rough going here.

This way. You can trust me to guide you as you go. You don’t have to shuffle your feet. There’s no curb or anything. I saw a driveway in the headlights just ahead here. Maybe we can stop in and borrow their phone to call the automobile association.

And yup, here it is, right here.

Wait a moment. There’s a gate. Wow. It’s one of those big wide iron gates. Man! This thing looks like it hasn’t moved in ages. If I didn’t see a light up at that house I’d say we should keep going. Here, slide sideways with me. It’s cracked open here.

Okay, let me fill you in on what’s ahead: That incline you feel cramping the back of your calves is us walking up a long driveway between trees that could use a lot of trimming. I can’t really make out most of the house, yet, except for a high window with a light on. It’s in a square tower that's built into the front of the house, but stands separate at the top floor.

Oh, wow. This place is Victorian. It’s three stories tall - oh, but that top floor is more like a tall attic. It’s got those really high gables and all kinds of filigree. And that tower with the lit window rises up from the front door.

I can see a veranda on the side of the house. It might even wrap around the back, but it’s too dark to tell. The whole place is really pretty, if a little run down. The front porch has a double set of doors and its own little peaked roof with two slim pillars on either side.

I don’t see a light on, but it looks like we have to go in there to get to the front door. Do you want to go in with me?
